Anyone interested in honing their photography skills now has a chance to do so with one of the world’s greatest living photographers.   Allen Rokach—hailed by the New York Academy of Sciences as “one of the world’s preeminent flower and garden photographers”— will lead a weekend workshop and lecture March 4th, 5th, and 6th as offered by the Key West Art & Historical Society’s adolescent and adult education program, “Outside The Lines.”

Throw any big name publication on the table and chances are Rokach has had editorial assignments with them or has had his work featured on their covers: National Geographic, Audubon, Natural History, the New York Times, Southern Living, Better Homes & Gardens, Coastal Living, Cooking Light, Science Digest, and many more.  He has instituted and participated in renowned photography educational programs throughout the country and has proved himself a master teacher with glowing reviews from his previous students. Rokach has lectured and led workshops all over the world and now comes to Key West to share his wealth of knowledge.

“With the impressive credentials that Allen has, this workshop is one that will be beneficial for beginner photographers to professionals,” says Society board member and photographer Todd Feit. “It’s going to be great to learn from a master teacher and see things in a new way.”

Rokach will kick off the workshop with an evening lecture on “The Art of Digital Photography” on Friday, March 4 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House Museum. In this lecture, he will demonstrate with photographs he has taken around the world the creative possibilities of digital photography.

The following two days, Rokach will lead workshop participants through Key West’s most iconic locations to create a portfolio of images that capture the island through individual perspectives. He will coach students to create distinctive images of people and places using abstract elements of design and interesting light, the creative uses of iPhone and iPad technology, and instructions on the “Rokach effect.”  He will also offer daily reviews of participants’ work, instructing on ways they can fine-tune and enhance their images.

The workshop precedes Key West Art & Historical Society’s inaugural photographic expedition to Havana, Cuba from May 27-31, with Rokach as the workshop leader. Information on this trip will soon be posted on the KWAHS.ORG website— check back for details.

Spaces are limited in this workshop—register online at KWAHS.COM/LEARN; KWAHS Members: $120; Non-members $150. For more information about this and other programs please contact Adele Williams, Director of Education, at 305-295-6616, ext. 115.  Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.
