August 1856: Captain Roswell Baldwin of the Isaac Allerton set sail from New York harbor. In its cargo, the ship carried fine Italian marble destined for the U.S. Customs House in New Orleans. Yet the ill-fated ship never arrived. On the night of August 27th, the Isaac Allerton encountered a hurricane off the Florida Keys. On Captain’s orders, the crew cut the masts and weighed the anchor to keep the ship from being ground to pieces on the reef. All efforts to save her proved futile and she struck bottom on Washerwoman Shoal, 15 miles southeast of Key West, in the early hours of August 28th, 1856. The Isaac Allerton immediately began to break apart and Captain Baldwin wasted no time rounding up all those aboard to abandon ship. All personal effects were left where they lay in the cabins and quarters, where some of them remained undiscovered for almost 130 years. The crew and passengers were rescued later that day by Key West Wreckers and not a single life was lost.

The Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum is home to numerous artifacts salvaged from the Isaac Allerton, including items from the Captain’s Cabin, seen here on display.
