A Very Key West Mother’s Day
by Shayne Benowitz
Have you made plans for Mother’s Day yet? Alright, for everyone who’s waited until the last minute to figure out how to celebrate mom, I’ve got a perfect day planned for you. The best way to get a lay of the land and learn about Key West’s quirky history is to take a ride on the Conch Tour Train. On Mother’s Day, all moms are treated to a lovely rose and VIP service.
The tour snakes all over town where you’ll learn about Key West’s special architecture while driving past some of the islands most unique homes. You’ll also learn about the tropical flora indigenous to Key West and about our sand imported from the Bahamas. Your train conductor will tell you about Key West’s historical connection with Cuba and about some of the interesting characters who have made Key West home. The tour takes approximately 90 minutes and departs from Mallory Square all day long.
To round out your day, take a look at my previous post about Key West brunch classics and treat mom to a special meal at one of the island’s most beloved eateries for an indulgent Sunday meal.
And of course, there’s no better way to end a day in Key West than by watching that gorgeous sun simmer into the ocean’s western horizon. For a boisterous celebration with street performers and musicians, head to Mallory Square. For a more tranquil experience, take a stroll along the western end of Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. Finally, for a covetable bird’s eye view of the harbor, ascend to the rooftop bar at the La Concha Hotel. Happy Mother’s Day!
