Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum
New on Display at the Shipwreck Museum!

Emeralds from the 1656 Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas
The Maravillas, the Almiranta of the Spanish treasure fleet of 1654 -1656, left for Spain on a mission to return tons of coins and treasure from the New World mints.
Treasure which included large quantities of gold and silver coins, jewelry, pearls, and precious stones. After loading cargo in Panama and Cartagena, the fleet waited in port in Havana while more pesos were being recovered from the south seas fleet’s Capitana, which recently sank near Ecuador. Once fully loaded, the Maravillas and fleet began their return and quickly encountered strong winds. On January 4, 1656, the Maravillas collided with another ship in the fleet then sank after striking the reef.
Much remained lost and would lay undisturbed on the seafloor over the next 300 years. In 1972 the shipwreck was rediscovered along with significant quality quantities of rare Spanish colonial coins, artifacts, and Columbian emeralds mined during the mid-1600s.
Today visitors to the Shipwreck Treasures Museum can view treasures and artifacts from SEVEN different wrecks, including silver, coins, and emeralds from the 1656 Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas!
