Philip Greene: An Evening with Tennessee Williams
Join us at the Key West Theater with Philip Greene to sample Tennessee Williams and friends favorite cocktails.
If your idea of a perfect evening is to settle in with a good cocktail and a great novel, perhaps one written by a great Key West author, how does a good cocktail from a great novel sound? Raise a glass to celebrate the birthday of Tennessee Williams, and while doing so, enjoy some of the drinks showcased in the works (and lives) of Tennessee Williams, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ian Fleming, Raymond Chandler, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, Dorothy Parker, and other sipping scribes, including that other writer who made the Conch Republic home, Ernest Hemingway. Sample a Rum-Coco, a drink Tennessee Williams featured (and likely invented) in the pages of his 1959 play “Night of the Iguana.” Enjoy a classic Hemingway Daiquiri, which Papa said, in Islands in the Stream “felt, as you drank them, the way downhill glacier skiing feels running through powder snow.” Also, learn the history and folklore of the Americano and the Negroni, which were a favorite of Hemingway as well as Ian Fleming and his James Bond character. And finally, savor that classic New Orleans drink, the Sazerac, another Tennessee Williams favorite.
Learn how to make these classics, hear excerpts from the books in which they’re featured, and anecdotes about authors and their favorite drinks. You’ll also enjoy some delicious, cocktail-appropriate snacks.
